The Best Shovel You'll Ever Own - Lauresa's Favorite Tool
I can’t say enough good things about this shovel. Have you heard of the Spear Head Spade?
Once upon a time, I got a free magnolia bush from our city’s “free tree day”.
I’ve killed shrubs before by not planting them soon enough, so I made sure to start digging a hole as soon as possible.
I live in Northwest Arkansas. If you live here, you’ll agree that the entire area is a giant mass of red rocks with a tiny layer of sod or topsoil on top.
Needless to say, I dug about 4 inches down and hit a wall of stone. I was determined though, so I used my might to wrench up rocks, one by one… until i leaned really hard into my shovel, and… broke the handle right off!
Fortunately this was in my front yard and my neighbor had been watching me. She saw me try again with a new shovel and said hold on, you need a different kind of shovel.
She went into her garage and brought me this beauty! (In yellow too!)
I had so much fun digging that hole. 😅
The narrow shape of the head kind of maneuvers around the rocks, finding just the right crevice to sink into and find leverage. The tip is really sharp, so it breaks through heavy clay and sod really well.
The spear head spade is actually advertised as a tool for people who have a hard time maneuvering a larger shovel, or for digging up plants in a small space without disturbing the roots of other plants.
Whether you’re super strong or have a hard time digging with a regular shovel, the spear head spade makes digging any kind of hole really easy. Why not be really efficient?
I’ve since used my spear head spade to til up soil in a small area, cut hosta bulbs in half and transplant elsewhere in the flowerbed, and dig just about any kind of hole.
The spear head spade is NOT great for moving soil since the head is so narrow. A manure fork or just a regular shovel is what you need for that job.
I had to return the spear head spade to my neighbor, so you know I bought my own! They’re not cheap, but seeing how easily I broke a $20 shovel, I consider this purchase an investment piece.
I love all the fun color options too!
