It’s been a little over a year since Lauresa and I have started our Black Thumb journey and one of the things that has stood out to me is the absolute uniqueness of each and every garden. Sure, we all follow the same basic rules regarding our plants, but I feel like each of the gardens that I have seen my friends, family, and fellow club members grow are all a small reflection of their own personalities. And I find that incredibly beautiful!

Take Lauresa and I for example… we (obviously) have a lot of shared vision and goals, but our gardens look nothing alike! Despite that, we are able to learn from each other and inspire each other.

So what kind of gardener am I?

I tend to think of myself as a very organized person. In my house, I want everything to be in it’s place and to be neat and tidy. I like my garden to be the same way. For me, that desire for organization lead me to choose garden boxes and square foot gardening techniques. I crave the routine of going out to my garden at the same time every day and checking on it’s progress. And if I have to choose between doing something by hand or having some sort of system to do it for me, I will choose to do it by hand- but that may just be so that I have an excuse to be in the garden!

For a long time, I have been fascinated with the idea of heirloom seeds. I love the idea of using seeds that have not been designed in a lab but have a story. And I love you can pass those same seeds down from generation to generation. My daughter takes great pride in our garden and I hope that one day I can pass the great grandchildren of these seeds down to her. I have decided that this is the year to switch to heirloom seeds. I’m excited to learn more about harvesting and storing seeds. And let’s be honest… I’m also hoping that my garden does a little better in 2019 than it did this last year. I was a bit unprepared for the intensity of the San Antonio heat!
